Hi. Kiva again. This one’s not easy. But HERNIA is one of the most important groups AZ has ever seen and they deserve as much exposure and support as possible. Rest in peace Trev and Daniel. You’ll never know how much I have to thank you for.
MINCING IN HELL. The snare control is what immediately stands out to me. Trevor finds a way to go completely insane while pulling the whole song together. Each instrument in this song continues to climb up and down in a whiplash of thrash, each fast blast a testament to the players. The snare is an over inflated kickball in gym class, Ray and Trevor echoing and matching each other vocally. Classic NY punk worship. The bass Daniel wrote makes HERNIA a complete and powerful force.
OVERUSE. Again, the snare is the track's welcomer. Ray's vocals sit so low they're almost a second bass. Nyle’s production is unmatched. BLACK MASK is the first time I can hear all their glory in a produced track. They like to switch between a heavy chug that makes you wanna slug someone and a steady push that makes you wanna drop kick everyone in sight--and yeah, they’re different, okay? Trevor’s vocals are some of the most raw and powerful punk shit you could ever dig for. The breakdowns aren’t masturabatory, they are a sincere break of the artists. Feeling the difference on this track is beyond words.
BLACK MASK. BREAK YA LEG. Seamless transitions between chaos and stability continue to prove they are some of the most controlled and skilled musicians. The vocals sit opposite each other as Ray goes low and Trev goes high, establishing a plane of sound--a plane they continue to manipulate. My favorite thing about HERNIA is their dedication to paying homage to the roots while reinventing the sound. Watching Ray play the guitar in these songs, you can see just how intricately he writes. Nothing is passed over.
S.D.A.S.T.F.U. I vividly remember the night of my 21st birthday, when Trev wore a hat adorning this same acronym. This track opens and Trevor screams in your ear over blast beats, “SIT DOWN AND SHUT THE FUCK UP!” Hey, let him talk!
HERNIA was THE group. They taught all of us so much and wanted to help us idiots. They will never not be that for me. They will never not be the Blood Drive that inspired me to start playing drums. More will come in honor of Trev and Daniel from me, but for now this EP is everything we remember them to be--perfect.
Thank you Trev. Thank you Daniel. Thank you Ray. Thank you HERNIA. Ray will continue to shred, find him and support him.
10/10
